The menu lists the ingredients of this stew as New Mexican Red Chili and Hominy with Cilantro, Onion, and Lettuce. It is served with house made Blue Corn Tortillas.
Three standard versions of Posole exist: clear, red, and green. Red makes for a beautiful presentation, no doubt about it. This is the second time I have run into Posole on the menu that includes shredded lettuce instead of shredded cabbage (lettuce wilts faster in the warm liquid and doesn’t hold its texture), and it didn’t come with salsa, which is usually poured on top as a garnish after the cabbage. Not a problem though, I ordered mine on the side and gained three more wonderful Blue Corn Tortillas. This version was made with chicken instead of the typical pork.
Perhaps I am spoiled by the version in my own neighborhood that makes an authentic Jalisco, Mexico version. But this is Southwest, so the rules are different, and you wont find better tortillas around the bay than these soft blue gems. They are not to be missed.
The Posole from the Green Chili Kitchen was far better than my last sampling of the traditional stew (from Colibri), for one thing because the cilantro was fresh, not dried, and second, because the onions were sweet, not red. Squeeze the fresh lime wedge across the top of this bowl, and you’re in business.
The verdict? Wonderful! The chicken was just right, the colors were rich, the flavors were authentic, and the atmosphere was very welcoming. This was a great bowl of soup and a good dining experience!
The chilis used in this establishment come directly from Bueno Farms (a family owned farm) in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
As with so many restaurants I come across in San Francisco, organic, sustainable, and local (whenever possible) foods are the focus in The Green Chili Kitchen. A return visit is a must. I have a new favorite Southwest kitchen.
A sister restaurant is just around the corner. ‘Chili Pies and Ice Cream’ is on my list of very near future visits as well. Who wouldn’t be curious to visit a restaurant with that curious headline on the windows?
